Every musician takes a different stand when it comes to pitch correction plugins. I, personally, am not a big fan, as I like the natural imperfections of human vocals. However, that is not where the industry is heading. Love it or hate it, auto-tune or pitch correction plugins are here to stay. And they are getting more accurate and better every day. Since the Antares’ Auto-Tune, the game has significantly changed, and now there are countless options.

Most pitch correction plugins are intended for studio use, and there are relatively fewer plugins for live performances. That is where the Waves Tune Real-Time comes into play. Of course, when I see a real-time process plugin, the question I ask is always about the latency. And that is where this plugin actually shines.

Waves Real Time

The plugin comes with classic pitch correction software controls such as Speed and Note Transition knobs. Speed is for adjusting how quickly the plugin detects the wrong pitch, and the Note Transition decides the speed at which the pitch is corrected to the goal note. I found the correction algorithm pretty transparent and effective with these two controls set to the default level. For more “autotune” effects or less skilled singers, tweaking them a bit works better.

The interface also has two Tolerance controls: Cents and Time. The Cent knob allows the voice to pass the correction point between two notes to prevent any type of warbling artifacts. This way, the note transitions are smoother. The Time knob allows the voice to drift slightly longer before it gets corrected. So this way, there won’t be any pitch shifts. And finally, there is the Vibrato control. As the name suggests, it increases or decreases the vibrato effect in the voice. While it is set to default, the natural vibrato is not affected.

The display monitor shows the real-time pitch correction in the right-hand corner. You can also turn on Formant correction to preserve the natural tone when larger pitch shifts occur.

In my opinion, where this plugin stands out from the rest is the bottom part of the interface. You have the Range and Scale settings with a keyboard to choose the notes. You can activate correction, bypass, or force correction to the next lower or higher note for each note. The last feature is handy as you can save it as a song preset.

You can also choose your voice type and range from bass to soprano and the reference Hz and scale you want to use.

When I tested the plugin, I was surprised to find that there was no latency issue, even when the buffer was set to 128. There is a slight chorus in corrected notes, but nothing that really affects the transparency. I only experienced it when the note I was singing was really off, and the correction had to be quite big. For more subtle corrections, the plugin works fast and transparently, making it a great tool for live performances as well as studio recordings.

I think any singer who wants a little push for their singing should have this plugin in their collection. That is why this offer from Waves, decreasing the price from $199 to $39.99, is a great opportunity for vocalists and producers.
