Soundevice Digital has just released a new randomizer plugin to add those little imperfections to your mix for more realism. As an introductory deal, the plugin is free until April 21st.
For me, music is not about perfection but those little imperfections that give character to a mix. Paradoxically, the imperfection is what creates perfection. And that is where Randoachine comes into play.
As Soundevice Digital says, these little imperfections make your creation sound real and alive. It can be the hi-hat hits, crashes, sound effects, or anything in your mix; these small or big differences can make your samples sound unique.
So, the developer did a good trick by enabling the plugin to be triggered from three different sources, including MIDI information, project tempo, and audio input. I like this versatility as it gives much more options to play with. Also, in my opinion, it is a nice touch that MIDI can be triggered or reset by controllers or tracks, as you like.
The transient mode is the audio signal, the MIDI mode is the MIDI information, and the Sync mode deals with the project tempo.
I used the sync mode to control a chosen note of the MIDI info to use it on every hi-hat beat, for instance. The transient mode changes the parameters with every hit of the incoming audio signal.
The plugin comes with six different effects. Every time you trigger the randomization, the plugin plays with these six effects to create a unique mix without monotony. The effects include Pitch and Formant Shifter, Saturation, Panorama, Ambience, and Time offset.
So, Formant Shifter plays with the sound character. Pitch Shifter, you guessed it right, messes with the pitch of the audio with unpredictable variations, giving it liveliness. Saturation changes the distortion, while panorama is about randomizing the stereo field.
Finally, my favorite parameter is the Ambience, which creates nuances in the timing and spatial aspects of reverb. This one keeps the integrity of your mix while creating those nuances that get rid of the monotony.
The developer also added some presets for ease of use. Each preset emphasizes one parameter above others. But in my experience, it is better to adjust them yourself, as every mix will require a different touch. Also, I created and saved my own presets, which served me better than the developer’s presets.
I think it is a great plugin for electronic music, especially. But I recommend going subtle with it, as it can create unexpected results that may really mess with your mix. So, my suggestion is to finetune parameters with automation. You can increase or decrease some parameters or simply just bypass the plugin in some sections.
One last addition I enjoyed is the plugin’s intelligent sleep mode. It detects when it does not need to perform at all, goes to sleep mode, and uses 0% CPU. This way, the computing sources are left to other plugins or processes.
Remember that you can still choose the 15-day free trial option if you miss the free deal. Later, the plugin will be sold for $52.
Randomachine comes in AU, VST, VST3, and AAX for Windows and Mac platforms.
