Nearly all modern computer systems allow us to simultaneously use more than one monitor. This facility not only increases multitasking but also increases productivity. As a result, more tasks can be done within a shorter period.
In this article, I will not only describe some of the most common advantages of using dual monitors. But I will also answer the frequently asked questions about the such setup. After clearing your concepts about CPU and GPU, you will get your answers simply and easily by defining each of them.
Does Using Dual Monitors Use More CPU/GPU Power & Usage?
Dual monitors use more GPU (graphics processing unit) in terms of power and usage, but their use has nothing to do with the CPU (central processing unit). The display monitors are directly connected to the GPU in your computer system, not your CPU. Hence, dual monitors use and consume more GPU power.
A GPU’s responsibility is to provide a display on the monitors because the CPU is bound to perform arithmetic and logical functions when software or app is running on your computer. In addition, GPU has a processor that calculates graphical data. It also has VRAMs for storing that data before and after processing.
CPU and GPU work together, and both are used for various purposes. However, GPU is mainly used to display the outcome in a graphical format, while the CPU is involved in performing calculations and algorithmic functions.
Moreover, dual monitors also need more bandwidth from a data bus because they require more data to be transferred to display two screens simultaneously. It requires additional power, resulting in increased energy consumption by the GPU. Overall, dual monitors consume more GPU power than single monitor setups but not CPU power.
Do Dual Monitors Affect GPU Temperature?
Modern GPUs are made for attaching more than one monitor at a time. And every monitor receives graphics data from the graphics card for displaying it on its screen. During this data transfer, the current flows from one side to another.
More monitors cause more current flow, and more current flow generates more heat in electronic components on a GPU. As a result, more power is consumed, and more temperature is generated. If the heat stocks inside the casing of your computer, then it can burn out your GPU, as you see on the internet.
Can Dual Monitors Decrease FPS?
The term “Frame” is referred to a unit for storing moving images in a video or a game for displaying them using a display device. GPUs have a dedicated memory called VRAM for storing these frames. Hence, dual monitors will not decrease FPS because the GPU manufacturers have defined different channels for all monitors.
The dual monitors will consume more GPU resources like power and VRAM for storing frames. But don’t worry; this will not affect your computer’s gaming performance or FPS.
Do Dual Monitors Affect Performance?
If you are using the latest GPU, then dual monitors should not affect performance. It is because modern graphics cards are built for connecting multiple monitors simultaneously without affecting performance.
But after connecting dual monitors, if you feel a change in the performance, consider installing and updating the drivers from the official site of the GPU manufacturers. Do consider what kind of drivers you want to install, the ones for gaming or creativity purposes.
Does Dual Monitor Affect CPU?
After the concept of DMA (direct memory access), scientists and engineers isolated most of the hardware from each other. But it does not affect the communication among that hardware. Similarly, the CPU has almost nothing to do with dual monitors; instead, it is the responsibility of the GPU to handle that.
Attaching dual monitors does not affect the CPU because the GPU takes care of all the display devices connected to a computer system. Without any affect, GPU does all the math during gaming, and CPU minds its business.
Do Dual Monitors Have To Be The Same?
When connecting dual monitors to a graphics card, compatibility becomes the issue, not the similarity. The latest GPU can attach nearly all of the well-known display monitors present today. Hence, your monitors do not need to be from the same company.
You can use vertical monitors with horizontal ones, and you can attach a 4K monitor with a 1080p monitor. It all depends on what type of graphics card you have, its power output, and the resolution capacity of display monitors.
Do Dual Monitors Have to be The Same in Terms of Size?
We have seen people using dual monitors having different sizes and even resolutions without any problems. It is because both monitors can be different in size and resolution, meaning one can be bigger and better while the other can be smaller. So, in the end, both monitors will display graphics without any issues.
Most gamers and editors use two monitors, one IPS, one TN panel, one curved monitor, etc. But remember that all display devices connected to a single graphics card should have the same resolution (1920×1080) and refresh rate (60 Hz). So if you want to play games on ultra settings, then it is better to get two identical monitors. That will give you maximum performance.
General Benefits of Dual Monitors
Using dual monitors improves visual details and displays a larger portion of the game level than the single monitor. Using this method, a gamer can see and observe many more places on the map or environment. As a result, it increases productivity and helps you win the game.
Dual monitors are also helpful in photo editing. Photo editing is a skill for removing or adding certain graphics and details in a photo using certain photo editing software. During photo editing, we can display the photo to be edited before editing on one monitor and the photo being edited on another display monitor. That is how we can compare the “Before-and-after” difference.
Moreover, if you are a video editor, dual monitors are a necessity. Video editing also allows us to add or remove certain details from a video using certain software. Using dual monitors while video editing increases multitasking. For example, on one monitor, you can display the editing software; on the other, you can display the exported video for comparison purposes.
Use of dual monitors when developing a game can provide multitasking too much extent. You can display the gaming engine on the one hand and the gameplay on the other hand. Beware of some gaming engines that do not save your progress when the game is playing on the other monitor, and you are making changes.
Computer Graphics Imagery and 3D modeling allow you to create beautiful 2D and 3D graphics. These graphics and 3D models are not only used in games but also for 3D printing models. In addition, dual monitors allow you to add multitasking features when creating 3D models by visualizing different aspects of the same model.
Dual monitors help a lot when creating and rendering animated movies. On one monitor, artists open the animation tab, while on the other display monitor, they open the pose mode tab and timelines. As a result, they can see their progress and make quick changes to it when animating a character or object.
Dual monitors are beneficial for gamers, video editors, and many other professions. Dual Monitors can provide multitasking and increase productivity when working on computer projects. However, it is important to note that all display devices connected to the same graphics card should have similar resolutions and refresh rates to have maximum performance.
