We will examine whether logics stock virtual instruments, stock audio FX, and stock Loops are good for hip-hop, Trap, and Drill. We will also examine Logic’s samplers, drum machines, sequencers, and virtual drummers.
Stock Virtual instruments
When it comes to Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill, there are no real specific sounds that are must-haves. Hip-Hop was originally based on sampling, so no specific sounds are needed. Trap has always been more drum and bass focused with simple melodies, and although Drill was once known for dark piano melodies, that’s changed over the last few years.
If there are specific sounds that you feel Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill need, you can be sure Logic will have them. Logic has a wide range and a large number of virtual stock instruments.
Logic has over 20 main instrument categories, those being Bass, Drum Kit, Electronic Drum Kit, Guitar, Keyboards, Mallet, Orchestral, Percussion, Piano, Quick Sampler, Studio Horns, Studio Strings, Synthesisers, Vintage B3 Organ, Vintage Clav, Vintage Electric Piano, Vintage Mellotron, World, Arpeggiator, Cinematic and Legacy. Each category has 1-10 additional sub-categories and 5-40 instrument pre-sets within.
There are more than enough great melodic instruments for you to start creating Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill.
Stock Audio FX plugins
Effects are a must for Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill. Corrective effect plugins (like EQ, Compressors, and so on) are important to get a clean mix, but when arranging your beats, creative effects can make your beat stand out amongst countless others.
Main effect plugins
Of course, you have all the main effect plugins you expect to see built into a DAW. You have EQs, Compressors, Reverbs, and so on. Unlike some other DAW stock plugins, these plugins are all high-quality professional standard plugins.
- EQs – Logic Pro gives you some great EQ plugins. You get Channel EQ, Linear Phase EQ, Match EQ, Single Band EQ, Vintage Console EQ, Vintage Graphic EQ, and Vintage Tube EQ. These are great EQs to help you get clean mixes and great sound design for your Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill Beats.
- Reverb – Logic has four reverb plugins ChromaVerb, Space Designer, SilverVerb and EnVerb. These reverbs are great for mixing and sound design within your Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill beats.
- Compressors – Logic Pro has one main compressor, which has seven built-in pre-sets, some of that has been made to emulate some of the most popular hardware compressors. Like EQs, these compressors are great for cleaning your mixes on your Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill Beats. Logic Pros compressor also has Sidechain features, which is great for Drill beats.
Additional effect plugins
Logic has some great other creative effect plugins. My favorites for creating crazy effects are Remix FX, Step FX, and Phat FX.
- Remix FX – helps you create DJ-style effects and transitions for your tracks. You can access and build effects like Stutters, Echoes, Filters, Vinyl, Scratches, Tape Stops, Reverse Effects, Crushes, and Gating Effects. These effects are great for Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill, especially for Hip-Hop if you’re going for those old-school style beats with stutters and scratches.
- Step FX – adds more rhythm to your melodies, drums, and samples. You can access filters, step sequencers, and many other great effects. This plugin is also great for sound design.
- Phat FX – another plugin great for sound design. Phat FX is all about adding punch to your tracks’ drums, bass, and melodic elements. You can create great-sounding transitions in your arrangements using all Seven of the effects blocks.
These are just a few of the effects plugins Logic Pro has to offer. Logic also has other popular effects plugins like Pitch shifters, Pitch Corrector, Modulators, Arpeggiators, Filters, and many more that will be great for producing Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill.
Stock Loops
Logic Pro comes with a large collection of stock loops. There is a specific Loops pack for Hip-Hop, with over 1450 Loops.
Included in the Hip-Hop section.
- Melodic Loops with Strings, Guitars, Flutes, Synths, Pianos, Bells, and many more.
- Drum Loops separated into Hi-Hat Loops, Top Loops, and Full Drum Loops.
- Bass loops.
- Texture and FX loops.
All these loops are labeled with BPM and Key; you can search for Loops via BPM and Key.
There are no Trap and Drill loop packs as of writing this. However, with these two genres’ increase in popularity, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Logic update the library with Trap and Drill loops soon.
Besides the Hip-Hop loop pack, many other loops are at your disposal. With over 26000 Loops, there’s more than enough to help you start and finish your Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill beats.
You can filter the specific instruments, genres, and descriptors you want to help you find those loops perfect for Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill. For example, if I create a dark, gritty Hip-Hop beat, I may search for Instruments – Strings, Genre – Hip-Hop, Descriptor – Dark. For a Drill beat that doesn’t have a specific genre within the loop library, I may search for Instrument – Piano, Genre – Cinematic, Descriptor – Dark, and Intense.
Samplers
A key aspect of Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill is sampling. Hip-Hop melodies are famously known for sampling, and Drill 808 are known for crazy glides, which is only possible in a sampler.
Logic has a few notable samplers.
- Sampler – Logics’ main Sampler is called Sampler. This is my preferred Sampler for creating those Trap and Drill 808s, as you can easily get those iconic slides.
- Quick Sampler – Essentially a lite version of Sampler. Quick Sampler is great for loading in one-shot samples or quickly chopping up a melody.
- Drum Synth – A drum synth and drum sampler, Drum Synth gives you quick and easy controls for editing your drum one shot.
- Auto Sampler – This is great for quickly making full virtual instruments from recordings, samples, and plugins.
Drum machines
Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill are all notably famous for their unique drum patterns.
Logic has a few great drum machine options.
- Drum Machine Designer – This VST lets you create and save your electronic drum kits. You can apply effects to each sound or the kit as a whole, which is perfect for creating your drum kits for Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill. You can also use Drum Machine Designer for bass and melodic elements.
- Drum Kit designer – This VST allows you to create custom drum kits using Logics’ many drum samples. You can choose from many different effects and even select mic positions to help you recreate a real-life drum recording.
- Ultrabeat – Logics classic drum machine designer is a great way to load in your drum one-shots and start creating complex drum patterns. It features a built-in sequencer, and many premade electronic drum kit pre-sets. It also features sample banks full of snares, kicks, hi-hats, etc. You will also find classic kits like 909 kits and 808 kits, perfect for Hip-Hop and Trap.
Sequencers
As previously mentioned, drums are a key aspect of Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill, so a good sequencer is essential.
Logic has a great sequencer you can use no matter what VST you use. It’s especially great as you can quickly lay down your initial drum pattern in the sequencer, and then you can convert that sequencer pattern into a midi region for even more in-depth drum patterns.
Virtual Drummers
Continuing the drum theme, let’s look at Logic’s virtual drummers.
Logic pros virtual drummers are great for Hip-Hop and Trap. It’s not an ideal choice for Drill as Drill Drum patterns are often so unique that it would be easier to make them yourselves.
Logic Pro has seven genres to choose from, each with multiple drummers to choose from. Each drummer brings a different subgenre style. The genres are Rock, Alternative, Songwriter, RnB, Electronic, Hip-Hop, and Percussion.
The Hip-Hop genre has three drummers.
- Daz – Trap
- Anton – Modern Hip-Hop
- Maurice – Boom Bap
All these drummers have multiple pre-set within for you to choose from to help you get that perfect drum pattern. You can edit what drum and percussion sounds are played, and you can choose how often fills are played and change the swing level. There is also an X/Y Pad for Soft to Loud and Simple too Complex to help you craft that perfect pattern. You can quickly convert to MIDI if you want to export that pattern.
Of course, we only look at the Hip-Hop Drummers, but you could use any and export the MIDI and add Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill style drums.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Logic pro is good for Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill. There’s so much within Logic specially tailored for Hip-Hop and Trap, and with the rise of Drill, we could expect to see more specific Drill-related Loops, Patches, and Virtual Drummers.
Besides Hip-Hop and Trap specific sounds, there are many Samples, Loops, and Pre-sets to choose from. Despite Drill not having any dedicated Samples, Loops, and Pre-sets, there are still so many great sounds that can be used for the genre.
Outside the realm of stock VSTs, Effects, and Sounds, Logic comes fully loaded with Samplers and Drum machines to help make the most of your One-shots, Samples, and Loops when creating Hip-Hop, Trap, and Drill beats.
