The plugin gives you access to free-for-life updates once you buy it. The multi-modes and effects sound great and have deep control. Overall, the sound design capability is immense but heavy on the CPU. The sleep mode, smart bypass, and solo switches help with that, however.
1. Rift Filter Lite
Rift Filter Lite is an advanced morphing filter with a simple and easy interface.
There are 24 filters you can choose from and create morphing, vowel, and phasing type effects. In addition, the plugin is quite musical, as it offers TUNE type cutoff selection and filter modes, which lets you tune your filter parameters to the notes of a particular scale.
- Pitch Snapping
Using pitch snapping, scale presets, and MIDI tracking, you can morph the filters chromatically or on a scale. You can do that by clicking on a small keyboard icon at the bottom right of the plugin. That makes the plugin quite flexible and musical.
The workflow of the plugin is comprehensive yet simple. There are two modes: Tune (tuned notes) and Hz, four knobs: cutoff, resonance, spread, resonance, and a filter mix horizontal slider. With just a few controllers, the workflow becomes simple yet allows you to create interesting movements.
- Flexible Filters
The filter types are organized into four categories: Basic, Morph, Peaking, and Harmonic. You can map the filter cutoff via MIDI, Hz, and Tune (notes cutoff). Further, you can adjust the resonance and change the relative CUTOFF of the left and right channels to create wide stereo effects.
Rift Filter Lite is available in 64-bit AU, VST, VST3, and AAX plugin versions and is compatible with macOS 10.9 or higher and Windows 10/11.
The plugin is quite easy to use and visually appealing with its white-themed GUI. It’s compatible with all popular DAWs and also quite affordable. In addition, minimal Audio has created an innovative and unique filter morphing plugin with the Rift Filter Lite.
2. Image Line Morphine (For FL Studio Only)
Morphine is a 4-voice additive synthesizer.
Essentially, each voice in the plugin has 128 harmonics that you can edit to change and reshape the harmonic structure of your sounds. The four voices in the synth can be mixed and morphed in the Morph/Mix matrix. The Additive synthesis is based on Fourier Theory that each complex waveform can be broken down into sine waves and their functions.
Based on that, Additive synthesis, in theory, can help you create any sound. Combined with the resynthesis and Spectra technology in the plugin, the possibilities become endless.
- Sound Engine
The four independent sound generators or voices in Morphine are created so that the sounds are mapped across the keyboard in a complete set of keyboard zones with a spectrum of its own. Further, you can trace the sounds from an input sample by breaking down its frequency spectrum and resynthesizing them.
Morphine allows you to use four switchable effects: EQ, Reverb, Chorus, and Delay. The equalizer is an 8-band EQ with amplitude sliders and fixed resonance & slope. The other effects are multi-parameters.
- Other controls
The plugin has a good scope and flexibility for modulations, harmonic processing, filters, morphing the four sound generators, and more. The master controls include ADSR, glide knob, velocity sensitivity knob, drive knob, and master output volume. Morphine also has a 32-note polyphony and a comprehensive collection of 340 presets.
The plugin is available as a standalone, AU, and VST plugin version and requires OS X 10.8 or later or Windows 7 SP1 or later versions of operating systems.
Morphine is quite complicated to use and doesn’t have a workflow you can get used to in a single go. However, it’s unique and offers an interesting way of sound synthesis and designing. However, the interface and layout could have been better, and the sound quality and output could have also been increased.
But the great part about it is that you get complete control over your sounds and their harmonic structures. In addition, the resynthesis engine is cool and lets you transform samples into spectrums. Overall, it’s a fun synth and can produce innovative and out-of-the-box sounds.
3. DBI Transformer
DBI Transformer uses convolution processing to modify audio signals into something unique.
It allows you to apply the spectral content (frequency and amplitude data) of one sound source to another, thus totally transforming the original tone and texture. Its application lies in sound design, music production, foley, sound effects, and more for films, video games, trailers, animated content, etc. It has been used for production in video games and films like Venom (Marvel).
- Huge sound library
The plugin has a 1.2 GB of sample library with audio samples ranging from explosions, wooshes, sci-fi sounds, drones, foley, cinematic impulses and hits, creature sounds, and many more interesting sound effects.
- Flexible Workflow
The plugin can work in real-time using a mic or an instrument as an input. So you can play while morphing the sounds simultaneously. You can have 4 samples and one virtual instrument as a carrier signal, which you can modulate using Procedural Audio.
- Other features
You can apply two different effect plugins to process the sample(s). You can also load up four VST/AU plugins at the output stage. There’s a 5-band parametric EQ, pitch shifter, LFO, phaser, etc., along with the four plugins on the master rack. Lastly, there’s a preset manager, MIDI matrix, and keyboard shortcuts for easing your workflow.
The Mac system requirements for the plugin include a Mac Intel machine running OS X 10.11.6 or later, with 64 Bits and a minimum RAM of 4 GB. Also, the Apple M1 processors must use Rosetta 2 to run Transformer. The system requirements for Windows include a Windows 7 or later multicore processor, 64 Bits, and a Minimum RAM of 4 GB. The plugin is available in AU and VST formats only.
The plugin is all about procedural sound design and frequency profile crossovers, from real-time audio processing to using a microphone, samples, and virtual instruments as instruments. It has a complicated workflow that may be challenging for beginners. However, its complications are also its features and work in favor of the plugin.
We have seen all kinds of tools, from synthesizers to morphing filters to twisted effects. Each tool has a different sound, and no two plugins have the same functionalities. As a synth, Continua by Audio Damage and UAD Opal Morphing Spark are highly recommended for their simplified workflow and expansive modulations.
Morph EQ by Minimal Audio is the most creative, easy, and fun tool, whereas Orbitron is a great multi-effects tool. MMorph 2 and Transformer are recommended plugins that handle the interaction between two signals. However, all plugins are unique and have something special that may suit your workflow or personality, so explore for yourself.
