FREE PLUGIN: The Kiss Of Shame Tape Saturation

the kiss of shame

The Kiss Of Shame is an interesting and powerful tape saturation emulation plugin that can provide anything from crystal clear tones to grungy sounds

Well, I really love working with or listening to vintage-sounding pieces. That unique cassette sound is becoming more popular in the digitalized world these days. It is not easy to emulate that warm sound in the digital world, and many plugins I used did not give me exactly what I wanted. But The Kiss Of Shame gets pretty close.

So, let’s start with the user interface. I love straightforward designs that do not get things too complicated. This one is not only simple but also visually appealing. On the control panel, we have Age, Hiss, Blend, as well as Input and Output Trim knobs along with Tape Type, Environments, and Print Through selectors.

The controls give you quite a bit of versatility in shaping your sound. I found the Environment control pretty interesting as it decides the storage conditions for emulating different sound defects on your recording, like oxidation, magnetic particle instability, tape pack expansion/contraction, lubricant loss, “vinegar syndrome,” and more. This way, you can create quite different tones with higher realism.

Age control is also great, in my opinion. It kind of adjusts the intensity of the Environment effect as it controls the amount of hypothetical time the selected tape type has been subjected to the chosen Environment.

I loved playing with the Shame knob, too. It creates Drift, Wow, Flutter, and Scrape-Flutter effects, which sound pretty realistic.

My favorite part was The Print Through Control. It creates this realistic bleed-through effect. For those who don’t know, it creates analog speed fluctuations in old cassettes. Using this feature combined with synths creates a pretty great-sounding breathing effect.

The plugin offers two effects for different cassette types. The first is more reminiscent of the 50s-70s-style S-111 cassette, while the second is a more modern-sounding, clearer, higher-output format.

I also have to talk about the plugin’s visually appealing side. They added an animated interactive reel to the UI, which is really cool to play with. You can click or touch the illustrated cassette player to get an analog tape flange in real time.

Also, this is an open-source plugin, which means anyone can contribute, modify, upgrade, or customize the plugin as they want.

While I really like the cassette sound, I don’t use it often in my workflow. But, for lo-fi producers, I think this plugin is a gem. Also, I can see other musicians using this to add a bit of vintage saturation to their mixes or create vintage effects for some parts of their projects.

The Kiss Of Shame is available in VST3 and AU formats for Mac and Windows platforms.
