STARLIGHT is a part of the guitar FX pedal Stratus by Chaos Audio and is intended to add nighttime reverb and ambient quality to your sounds, which gives you the “feeling of a starry night.” Dreamy, indeed, both the visuals and the plugin.
The plugin has a simple GUI with four controls: SPACE, LUMEN, TONE, and MIX. STARLIGHT has no manual, relying on its clear labeling on its controls. Even so, I’ll dive into what each parameter does. SPACE increases the overall reverb and also adds more delayed voices. You cannot control the pre-delay time, but the plugin matches the tempo of the session you’re using it in. I could tell the delayed voices were syncing with my project BPM.
The aforementioned voices fit together well and sound diffused. So, the more you dial in the SPACE knob, the larger the space or the room you get without the voices sounding like noticeable reflections.
Next, the LUMEN knob increases the shimmery characteristics in the reverb. The TONE knob, when dialed to the right, increases the brightness or the overall high frequencies of the reverb’s tail. The MIX knob balances the dry/wet ratio, which, when placed at the extreme right position, keeps the signal 100% wet.
I would use this plugin on synths, vocals, and guitars for songs of indie, 80s, pop, and similar genres. It’s worth noting that, by default, the reverb tends to sound rather bright. So, adjustments to the Lumen, Space, and Tone controls may be necessary to achieve the desired balance and tonal characteristics. That’s particularly true when working with vocals.
The internal bypass switch of the STARLIGHT shimmer reverb plugin is a practical feature, facilitating easy comparisons to evaluate its impact on your audio. While the absence of factory presets might initially seem like a limitation, the plugin’s user-friendly interface compensates. Despite the lack of manual and predefined settings, STARLIGHT remains quite straightforward, making it accessible for beginners and seasoned producers alike.
Hence, the most notable strength of STARLIGHT is its ability to deliver its intended purpose without unnecessary complexities. Its simplicity doesn’t compromise its effectiveness. You can quickly grasp its controls yet fully customize it to reach your desired reverb tone.
Beyond its functionality, STARLIGHT also stands out for its aesthetic appeal. Its sonic characteristics and user interface create an enjoyable and visually pleasing experience. The dreamy and shimmery qualities of the reverb align seamlessly with the elegant design of the interface, creating a cohesive and immersive environment for users to craft their sounds.
Chaos Audio STARLIGHT is available in AUv2 and VST3 plugin formats for Mac and Windows operating systems.
