9. NI Session Guitarist: Strummed Acoustic 2 (Acoustic Guitar Library)
If it’s purely strumming guitar you need, Strummed Acoustic 2 has you covered with its two guitars.
Strummed Acoustic 2 is a dedicated library for playing plectrum strummed patterns. It features two esteemed guitars: the Martin 0-17 and the Guild F-412. The first is a warm-sounding traditional 6-string, while the second is a vintage 12-string from the 60s.
Each instrument features a range of strumming patterns ideal for any genre like rock, pop, folk, country, bluegrass, Latin, etc. You can play each pattern in any fret position to get the style you like. Try using a higher position for the chorus part, and let it chill with a lower position during the verse part.
Out of the dynamic patterns available in this library, you can select 8 of them for performing per instance. You can use key switches, modulation wheel (CC #1), and pitch wheel to switch between the selected patterns. You can also quickly crossfade chord voicings and add accents to make the performance even more natural.
- Intuitive Browser
The built-in library browser lets you find a matching pattern by tapping a rhythm on your keyboard or clicking the tap button on the screen. Furthermore, you can also filter the results by musical characteristics like articulations, time signatures, etc. The feature makes it easy for you to find the correct rhythm for your project as quickly as possible.
Strummed Acoustic 2 allows you to add doubling for stereo width. Similarly, you can control the pan of the high and low chord voicings (fret positions) to add extra stereo depth. And finally, you can use the built-in preset EQ, compression, and reverb to create different kinds of sound.
- Separate Bass
This feature lets you add a new bass pattern played on the lower strings to your rhythm. It’s handy for genres like country, folk, bluegrass, and even pop if you use the guitar alone as your accompaniment. After setting up a pattern, you can play the notes you want as the bassline. However, if you are after realism, it’s a good idea to avoid going overboard with this feature.
The library requires Kontakt Player or Kontakt (version 6.1+). Kontakt is available for Windows 7 or higher and macOS 10.13 or higher, both 64-bit only.
Strummed Acoustic 2 is excellent for adding clean strums to your production without spending too much time on the performance. Every pattern feels natural and generally works well in the mentioned genre.
Thanks to the multi-sampling and fret noise feature, I found that even the patterns I created in the piano roll feel pretty natural. Overall, you are getting two excellent-sounding guitars with fantastic performance for a very reasonable price.
10. Ample Sound Ethno Banjo
Ample Sound is one of the most well-recognized VST manufacturers in today’s world of digital music production.
Their products have set a standard in the industry, and they’ve always managed to deliver with high expectations.
This banjo is one of the more difficult instruments to recreate in a virtual setting because of the 5th string logic. From 9 different articulations, FX, and microphone modes, you have all the tools necessary to control your instrument and elevate your sound.
Fun fact: Ample sound purchased a Deering Sierra 5-string banjo at the 2019 NAMM convention, which was used to sample and create this current plugin;
- Articulations and modes
The nine different articulations are sustained, palm mute, natural harmonics, slide in and out, legato slide, hammer off, and strum. This new articulation goes beyond real-life techniques of playing the banjo. It allows you to play certain strings with sustain while playing other strings with strumming. Apart from articulations, they have also included different microphone modes that can bring out different tonal characteristics.
- Vibrato and Pitch bending
AEBJ’s system uses the latest technology in pitch bending. Modulation time or vibrato time is measured in milliseconds rather than note divisions, and you can also control the modulation gain and pitch. This means that your vibratos and pitch bends are going to sound a lot more natural and authentic.
- Riff machine and strummer
The riff machine comes with a lot of famous banjo pieces built-in. You can create your own riffs, but you can also use the existing ones to get new ideas and inspiration since they are made with all the features in combination to emulate the instrument’s techniques. The strummer is nothing further from Ample Sound, but you shouldn’t overlook it. You can get the natural chords for the Banjo.
- This plugin is available on Windows 7 or higher and macOS 10.9 or higher, both 64 bit only. It comes in VST 2/3, AU, and AAX formats.
Ample Sound just never disappoints. Their plugins are always well thought out, and I think this is arguably THE best banjo plugin on the market. The articulations, the modes, the vibrato, everything is executed so perfectly. It is a gift for banjo lovers.
11. Orange Tree Samples Evolution Mandolin (Kontakt Library)
Orange Tree Samples introduced the Evolution Mandolin under their top guitar engine. A plugin that combines features with an excellent composition experience.
Evolution Mandolin includes the top guitar engine that is still making waves in the plugin business and has a unique approach to simulating realism The sound library benefits from great mandolin samples produced on analog equipment in partnership with Rosewood Recording Company, which makes us feel that the mandolin sound is as accurate as possible.
It is a great sound library for country, classical music, jazz, folk, and Americana music. It benefits from articulations like palm mutes, harmonics, legato, and sustains. Unfortunately, Orange Tree Examples also included samples of incorrect notes, which may spread in the mandolin track. With all these professional capabilities, it can consume a significant amount of CPU resources, so let’s see how it can perform.
Surely the plugin is good at this. Effects like “Distortion, Tremolo, Volume, Wah, Reverb pedal, EQ, Compressor, Chorus, Flanger, Reverb Rack, Delay, Spring Reverb, even an AMP, and CAB section” may be used to alter the tone of the mandolin. The effects are accurate, very well incorporated into the plugin UI, and one-of-a-kind.
- Pick Modeling
When this option is enabled, you can alter the pick location based on the string. If you place the pick near the bridge, you will get a brighter tone, but if you place it closer to the neck, as on a guitar, you will get a deeper, warmer tone. Alternate picking alternates the pick’s downstroke and upstroke. Economy picking was also implemented, allowing you to create mandolin sections with methods like sweep picking in a much more efficient motion. Of course, just as in real life, you may change the pick’s Noise Amount. It is useful when a precise rhythm is required.
The articulations include several elements, such as round-robin, three dynamics, and two pick directions. Also features additional effects like string slaps and muted strums, and you can even randomly activate the misfretted sustain, which adds to the realism. All articulations are usable in both the plugin interface and MIDI. Another skill like legato for slides, hammer-on, and pull-off. As a result, all of these meet the preferences of even the most demanding songwriters.
Guy Randle was the recording engineer, assisted by famous multi-instrumentalist Ryan Tilby, recognized for his eclectic collection of sounds and styles. To attain the quality of these samples, they employed analog equipment. Orange Tree Samples Evolution Mandolin has 2.5 GB of sampled to 1.05 GB of 24 bit. It should be mentioned that you have a multitracking capability that can reach quadruple tracking so this plugin packs significant power.
If you don’t want to go through all the settings, you may utilize a wide range of tone presets in your mix. Automatic chord detection is excellent, especially since all modern plugins include in addition, of course, it offers a strumming pattern editor, simplifying things if you’re on the go and need something quick.
It requires a free version of Kontakt 5.5.2 or higher. It runs on macOS 10.9 or higher (64-bit only) and Windows 7 or higher (64-bit only).
Certainly, the Evolution Mandolin provides a lot for the money. A vast array of effects, settings, and samples brings the game closer to reality. So, if you want to use it to its full potential, it certainly excels. It requires a significant amount of CPU resources due to its power.
12. Chandler Limited GAV19T
The Chandler Limited GAV19T is a British monster that lets you get the authentic sound of a full tube amp completely in your DAW.
This plugin is based on the Chandler GAV19T amp head, inspired by gear from the legendary Selmer, Vox, and Marshall. We can use GAV19T thanks to cooperation between Chandler Ltd. and Brainworx companies. And it’s worth saying that it came out versatile and good sounding.
The Chandler Limited GAV19T is a two-channel guitar amplifier that can achieve both classic slightly overdriven guitar tone and near-high gain sound. On the one hand, the interface is quite simple and concise, but you still have many options for achieving the desired guitar tone.
The most important thing about this will be the massive number of impulses based on the most famous types of cabinets and speakers. In addition, you will be able to change the character of your guitar sound thanks to the different bias options. Let’s take a closer look at the features of this plugin.
- Shape Switch
This switch is located on the front of the amplifier and will give you the ability to change the sound’s character dramatically. The Intense Shape position will take away a lot of the low midrange and make it sound more aggressive, while Normal will bring you a smoother sound.
- Drive options
You get several options to “warm-up” your amp with overdrive at once. There are two knobs in this section – Boost and Tone. The first influences the amount of drive, while the second influence its character. For example, there are Treble boost, Thick and Aggressive options.
- Different biases
One of the most exciting things about the plugin is the different biases. Position 1 is slightly over-biased, 2 is similar to a Marshall bias, 3 is identical to a Selmer, 4 and 5 are under-biased and adds sustain and character. By adjusting them, you also affect the character of the sound, as there is a shift between emulation of different tubes of the power amp.
- FX Rack & The Record Chain
This panel has everything that will give you a finished guitar tone. Here is the Noise Gate, the frequency filters, the Delay, and the IR loader. The latter has over 70 different IRs, making it possible to achieve guitar tone for any taste. In addition, you can upload your impulses here as well.
The plugin is available for Windows 7 or higher and macOS 10.9 or higher, both 64-bit only. It comes in VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
The Chandler Limited GAV19T is an excellent plugin for getting everyone’s favorite British guitar tone with many opportunities for experimentation.
You have all the options you need to change the character of your sound, and over 70 built-in impulses will allow you to dive into mining your tone even more.
The plugin will be perfect for both country and blues sounds and the more biting AC/DC tone. You can even try to use it for something around metal, but the rock genre will still suit it best.
13. Kuassa Efektor OD3603 (Overdrive)
Kuassa’s Efektor OD3603 gives you a warm and rich overdriven sound.
If you want crunchy saturated sound, go no further. As in style with the other Kuassa plugins – this one will also give you a few kinds of overdrive and a minimum of settings. You can stick it in front of a virtual amp and quickly get an excellent pushed sound.
OD3603, like the previous plugin, is part of Kuassa’s Efektor Distortion Bundle. However, the most exciting thing is that you also get five overdrive types, both classic and modern. And, of course, the software will provide you with other features that will make working with it easy.
- 5 Different Overdrives
You can start your experiments with Blues Overdrive based on British amplifiers. Then there’s dynamic and fat Boutique, thick Mad Overdrive, more distorted Modern, and warm Pro Overdrive. As you can hear, they all have different sound character.
- Simple Layout of Settings
As with the previous plugin, you will only have three knobs to adjust the effect. In particular, these are Overdrive, which is responsible for the amount of gain, Tone, and Level. With the latter two, you will be able to tune the frequency spectrum and the amount of output signal.
- Dry/Wet Control
A nice bonus here is the Dry/Wet knob. It helps you blend the overdrive to the original signal, thus making it in parallel. On the other side, you will also find Input, which will determine the amount of input signal to the plugin.
- Oversampling Feature
In this virtual overdrive pedal, you can also choose the amount of oversampling. As you already know, it will affect the quality of the distortion. In general, there is up to 8x oversampling.
Kuassa Efektor OD3603 is available for Windows XP or higher and macOS 10.5 or higher, both 32 and 64-bit. It comes in VST/3, AU, and AAX formats.
Kuassa Efektor OD3603 is a reasonably versatile overdrive plugin. You can use it as a utility to tighten your distortion or use it on the clean channel to get a rich saturated tone. There are enough different flavors of overdrive to satisfy the tastes of musicians of different generations. As for the price, it’s only $25.
14. Kuassa EfektorRV3604 (Reverb)
The unusually simple yet versatile Kuassa EfektorRV3604 will give you the best reverb flavors.
Of course, the first thing that comes to mind when you want to add space to a track is reverb. That’s why it’s one of the most popular effects in music production. It is also most commonly used on guitar solos, so reverb is used in guitar amps and as a standalone pedal. It is the stompbox emulation we are going to talk about now.
Here is another plugin from Kuassa called EfektorRV3604. It includes as many as five different types of reverb and only four settings knobs. Because it is so versatile yet easy to use, you can apply it to guitar parts and other instruments like vocals, keys, and more.
- Five Flavors of Reverb
The creators of this plugin have implemented the most famous reverb types here. There are five of them here: Room, Hall, Plate, Spring, and Shimmer. They all have different tails and flavors to be applied in many different cases.
- Tone Control
A separate Tone knob helps you make the effect darker or brighter. Again, it is beneficial to make it more prominent in the mix or push it to the background for an atmospheric feel. Use this based on your creative needs.
- Set the Amount of Reverb
The Reverb control on the left side of the window will be responsible for the amount of effect. It is another parameter that you should adjust to your liking. The more it is cranked up, the more spaciness you will get.
- Wet and Dry Level
Instead of the more familiar Mix knob, you get here two separate knobs, which will be responsible for the level of Dry and Wet signals. This way, you can adjust the ratio of both in more detail.
- Use Some Presets
If you are one of those who does not want to tinker with the settings themselves, you can try ready-made presets. Their names speak for themselves and will be well suited for different situations. For example, there are such options as Hall Prog Guitar, Hall Clean, Shimmer Drone, and others.
Kuassa EfektorRV3604 is available for Windows XP or higher and macOS 10.6 or higher, both 64-bit only. It comes in VST/3, AU, and AAX formats.
Kuassa’s EfektorRV3604 plugin is a beautiful virtual reverb emulator that lets you quickly add space to your guitar parts. It has all the most famous effect types and a minimum of settings to make the creative process easy. As for the price, it costs $25, which isn’t too expensive.
Best Free Country Plugins & Libraries 2022
1. Steve Barden 1937 Dobro
Steve Barden 1937 Dobro library will give you the warm sound of a resonator guitar in your DAW.
It is probably hard to imagine a typical country song without a dobro. This instrument has become one of the main attributes of the more classic type of this genre. And the good news is that you can use the sampled sound of a resonator guitar for free in your Kontakt player.
According to the website, the creator of this library, Steve Barden, sampled the dobro sound when he borrowed the instrument 20 years ago. You will not find many settings here because the library is quite straightforward. Nevertheless, it is quite easy to use.
- Three Articulations
The library has three articulations: Slide Up, Slide Down, and Normal. In the end, this is all the information that the interface of this library will tell you. By the way, the articulation is controlled by the velocity. So it can be tricky playing on the keyboard, but it should be easy when programming.
The library requires a free version of Kontakt. It runs on macOS 10.9 or higher (64-bit only) and Windows 7 or higher (64-bit only).
Steve Barden 1937 Dobro can be a great fit if you need to add this instrument as a “cherry on top” of your country song. The library is quite straightforward and has good sound. And it is not surprising because it is sampled from a real instrument. In general, you will have three types of articulations regulated by velocity.

It will be especially useful if you work in the country genre and need a different sound for different parts of the song. Luckily, this is exactly what Blue Cat offers with their Free Amps plugin.

- Adjust Reverb EQ
It’s also cool that you won’t need to look for a separate equalizer to shape the sound of the effect – you’ll have it right here. Of course, we’re talking about the EQ section, which you will see closer to the right side of the window. It is quite straightforward, as there are only three knobs: EQ Lo, EQ Mid, and EQ Hi.

While this plugin isn’t as customizable as the previous one, it still uses a quality banjo with down-and-up picked samples. It also has three dynamic levels with two round robins to add realism and authenticity to the sound.
This one is probably the easiest to use out of all the other plugins on our list, with a highly user-friendly interface. - Drive & Volume Control
As with the original pedal, you can adjust the amount of overdrive with the Drive knob. The more it is, the more saturation and harmonics you get. Balance your guitar tone with the second Volume knob.
- Tone Instead of EQ
This feature is also borrowed from the real Tube Screamer – it’s a Tone knob. With it, you can adjust the sound in terms of frequencies – darker or brighter. It’s very convenient, so you don’t have to bother with a regular equalizer.
- Hi or Lo Quality
There is also a separate function responsible for the quality of the output signal – it is a small Hi/Lo switch in the lower right corner. So, for example, if you don’t want to load the system, you can track on Lo position and mix on Hi.
- Use Mono or Stereo
And, of course, this little plugin can work in both Mono and Stereo modes. It is recommended to choose mono if you are working on two tracks of the right and left channels. Choose the stereo if you want one powerful part in the center.

1. Chris Hein Chromatic Harmonica
Chromatic Harmonica by Chris Hein is one of the most detailed sampled harmonica libraries you can find.
Of course, we cannot but mention another ideal instrument for country music – the harmonica. If you need a library that boasts extremely high sound quality, check out Chris Hein Chromatic Harmonica. This virtual instrument will pleasantly surprise you.
In general, this virtual harmonic has a four-octave range. The developers did a good job of giving an extremely detailed sound to this instrument because they used 7 thousand samples here. In addition, eight dynamic layers will bring you a realistic sound. Let’s see what else is here.
- Phase-Aligned Samples
One of the library’s most important features is that it uses Phase-Aligned Samples. The developers worked for six months to achieve this technology. As a result, you can get the perfect sound between six dynamic layers.
- Sampled From The Rare Harmonica
As for the instrument itself, the creators used an old rare Hohner Harmonica made in Germany. German musician Berthold Matschat, who specializes in creating sampled virtual instruments, recorded all samples. Therefore, you can be sure that it is created on a professional level.
- 14 Articulations
There are enough articulations in this library, namely, 14. You can find the whole list in the Basics tab. In particular, there are different types: Sustain, Fall, Bending, Attack, Staccato, Vibrato, Harmonize, Run Up and Down and more.

And master engineer Jeff Balding and producer Glenn Rosenstein helped them in this. By the way, the creators also used some authentic microphones of that period during the recording.
- Three Drum Kits
The creators of this collection included three drum kits ideal for traditional country sound – Rogers, Ludwig, and Apollo. By the way, you can use Ludwig and Apollo not only with sticks but also with brushes. All kits come with the Zildjian cymbals.

3. HoRNet HDD1 (Delay)
The emulation of the legendary delay pedal in plugin form is HDD1 from HoRNet.
If you are an experienced guitarist, you probably know this well-known white pedal called Boss DD. It is the first digital delay created in the form of a stompbox. It has a distinctive sound that has made it one of the favorite instruments of many musicians in terms of adding space.
The Italian company HoRNet decided to recreate this unit but in the form of a plugin. It has almost the same settings as the original pedal but still has a few extra features like analog saturation, stereo mode, etc. So let’s try to look at the functions in more detail.
- Choose Your Mode
As with the original pedal, you will have a switch between four modes of operation that determine the minimum and maximum delay times. Specifically, the shortest is from 12 to 50 milliseconds. The middle one is from 50 to 200 milliseconds. Then from 200 milliseconds to 800, and the last is Hold.
- Three Main Delay Settings
You also get three central knobs, which will be responsible for the operation of the delay – they are Effect Level, Feedback, and Delay Time. Thanks to the first one, you will be able to get ahead of the relationship between the dry and wet signals. Feedback is responsible for creating loops, and Delay Time allows you to set it manually.
- Stereo Mode
HDD1 plugin also has a separate Stereo Mode switch. It allows you to split the signal between the right and left channels. So you will have dry in the left channel and delayed in the right one. You will get a nice broad stereo effect if you use a short delay time.
- Analog Emulation
The creators of this plugin have also added Analog Emulation here. These are the two switches at the top right of the window. With the first one, you can apply analog saturation to your effect, and the second one allows you to add hiss, which can also be helpful in some cases.
- Tempo Sync
Another helpful feature that makes the plugin suitable for today’s users is the ability to synchronize with the tempo specified in your DAW. Just specify the necessary parameters at the bottom of the window, and it will work following the BPM of your song.
HoRNet HDD1 is available for Windows and macOS 10.7 or higher, both 64-bit only. It comes in VST/3, AU, and AAX formats.
The HDD1 plugin from HoRNet will give you a reasonably similar emulation of the first digital delay effect pedal. You will get all the usual settings and additional features that make the plugin more functional in the current conditions. We can’t forget to mention the price, which is only 5 euros, making this software extraordinarily affordable.
4. Brainworx bx_bluechorus2 (Chorus)
The bx_bluechorus2 plugin by Brainworx brings the sound of a classic modulation effect to your DAW.
The Boss CE-2 is one of the most popular chorus pedals. It was initially released in Japan in the ’80s and has since been heard on hundreds of albums worldwide. The fact is that this unit is elementary to use and provides a rich and fluid tone. Now we’ll talk about a pretty good emulation of this pedal.
bx_bluechorus2 is a relatively similar emulation of this pedal. So again, you get a familiar sound that you can apply to guitars, keys, and other instruments. And, of course, this software completely repeats the set of pedal settings, so applying the effect will be very simple and easy.
- Rate Control
You can get fast sweeps and long wobbles like the original pedal. And that’s thanks to the primary chorus control, called Rate. This knob will be located on the left side of the plugin window.
- Adjust Your Depth
Another crucial control here is Depth. It will determine the amount of chorus in the ratio to your signal. Again, tweak this to your liking to get what you need for creative purposes.
- Mono or Stereo Operation
You can use bx_bluechorus2 in both mono and stereo. The second option would be fantastic to achieve the most incredible fullness of the stereo picture. So, experiment to see what you need.
- Can What the Pedal Can’t
Of course, when thinking about the advantages of the plugin over analog gear, we can think of things like stereo bus processing and automation. So working with this software, you can achieve excellent creative solutions that are hard to get with an actual pedal.
Brainworx bx_bluechorus2 is available for Windows 8 or higher and macOS 10.11 or higher, both 64-bit only. It comes in VST2/3, AU, and AAX formats.
bx_bluechorus2 by Brainworx is a very easy-to-use plugin that allows you to quickly apply the sound of the legendary chorus in your DAW. Of course, you only get a few controls, but there are enough possibilities to achieve a quite subtle sounding effect and a pretty extreme one.
